Bought a 1978 guide to self-sufficiency thinking it was practical and it's just instructions for building a root cellar out of stone

The whole first chapter is about how to find the perfect hillside for your dugout, which doesn't help me one bit in my second-floor apartment, so did I just grab the worst thrift store find ever or is there actually a niche for prepper literature from the disco era?

Root cellars were kind of a big deal back then. Might be fun to read for the historical value, at least.

You really hit on something there. It's easy to forget how much work went into just keeping food on the table before refrigerators. My grandma had a tiny root cellar under her porch, and she'd talk about storing apples and potatoes in there like it was normal life. Reading about the history of those things makes you realize how much we take for granted now. It's kind of humbling actually.
