Friend told me my thrift store book picks were too boring and made me try a beat-up spy novel

She handed me a creased 1984 Le Carre paperback I always skipped and said read the first page, so I did, and now I look for cold war stuff every time.

Tbh that's exactly how I got hooked on old spy novels too.

And keep a few of those old paperbacks around the house. When I wanted to get into the genre, I grabbed a beat up copy of "The Spy Who Came In from the Cold" from a thrift store for a dollar. That's the key, find the older, simpler stuff before everything got all high tech and complicated. It gives you a real feel for how the tradecraft used to work when it was all just people, paper, and dead drops.
