Found a 1970s cookbook with a recipe for "Jell-O salad" that had mayo and shredded cheese, and it sparked a whole debate with my roommate
Picked this beat up cookbook from a library sale for like 50 cents last weekend. It's full of these wild mid-century dishes where everything is suspended in Jell-O. I showed my roommate the recipe and she was horrified, but I kind of want to actually try making one just to see what it tastes like. She said I was crazy for even considering it. Has anyone else actually cooked something from an old cookbook that ended up being way better than it sounds on paper?

Oh man, I gotta respectfully push back on the horror reaction a little. My grandma used to make this thing she called "lime surprise" that was basically lime Jell-O with cottage cheese, pineapple, and Cool Whip folded in, and it was honestly pretty good. Not something I'd eat every day, but for a potluck in July it hit the spot. The mayo and shredded cheese version though, that's where I'd probably draw the line. That combo sounds like it'd be way too savory and rich for Jell-O to handle, but hey, your mileage may vary. If you do try it, please report back because I'm genuinely curious how that one turns out.
