Wasted $150 on a fancy taping knife set that ruined my finish...

I bought a pricey 5-piece carbon steel taping knife set off some online tool shop about 4 months ago. First job I used them on, the mud kept sticking and pulling up on the second coat no matter how thin I mixed it. Ended up having to scrape everything down and redo a whole master bedroom in Des Moines with my old stainless blades. Anyone else had luck with those high-end knives or is it just marketing hype?

@oscar390 saved my bacon, I was about to chuck them in the river like a real pro.

Yeah, that "carbon steel is better" thing is mostly marketing. I ran into the same problem with a set I bought a few years back. The mud sticks to carbon steel until you really break them in, and even then stainless is just easier to work with. Your best bet is to rub down those blades with some fine steel wool and a little mineral oil before using them again. Gives the mud something to grab onto without pulling.

Hold up, you're saying even @oscar390 had trouble with carbon steel knives?
