Threw $180 down the drain on cheap corner beads
Bought a bulk pack of no-name paper-faced beads off Amazon. Three months later they're all rusting through on a job near the coast in Galveston. Gonna have to rip and replace the whole thing now. Any of you guys had bad luck with bargain beads too?

Did you get the no-name ones with the thin galvanization or whatever they spray on there? I used to roll my eyes at guys who swore by the name brand stuff, figured it was all the same metal and paper. But after seeing what salt air does to those cheap beads, I completely changed my tune. Three months is brutal though, especially if you're on a coastal job where moisture hits everything harder than inland work. Your mileage will definitely vary with no-name brands, but my experience says if you can't verify the coating spec, it's not worth saving ten bucks.

You know what nobody talks about with those no-name beads? The paper quality. I've seen cheap ones where the paper starts separating from the metal in just a few weeks, not even from rust but from normal humidity changes. The name brands use a better glue bond that actually holds up when things expand and contract with temperature swings. That thin galvanization is bad enough, but if the paper peels off first you're basically just taping a strip of metal to the corner anyway.

Wash the whole area with a zinc-rich primer before you patch anything new in. The rust has probably stained the surrounding drywall paper and mud, so hit that with an oil-based stain blocker first. Get the vinyl beads instead of paper-faced metal if you're working near the coast, they'll never rust. And next time skip Amazon for drywall supplies, just go straight to the local supply house where you can actually see the product and ask the counter guys what they use.
