You're saying the old timer told you to pre-fill butt joints? Honestly I gotta disagree with him there. Pre-filling them just leaves you with extra clean up and can mess with your weld penetration if you don't get all the slag out. I'd rather just run a hot pass and let the filler do its job. But hey, different strokes for different folks I guess, maybe he's got a method that works for him on certain materials.

Ngl @richard_west5, hot pass is cleaner but pre-fill saves time on thick joints if you know your slag.
