That constant hum on the portside pump had me stumped

It was just a low buzz but it kept getting louder over three shifts. I pulled the strainer and even backflushed the line, no change. Finally, I got down with a stethoscope and traced it to a worn impeller seal letting in a tiny bit of air. A new seal kit later and she's purring like new again, felt great to solve it.

Man, I wish I had your patience! Last time I heard a weird pump noise, I just hit it with a wrench and called it a day. Totally made it worse because I knocked a bracket loose. Your stethoscope trick is GENIUS.

How did you rule out bearing failure before going for the seal? Most guys just swap parts until the noise stops.

Exactly, it's that same jump-to-fix habit everywhere. You see it with mechanics just swapping parts, but also when people reboot a router ten times instead of checking the cable. Using a stethoscope to listen first is just smart diagnosis, same as a doctor checking your lungs before writing a script. Rushing past the "why" usually just wastes time and money, whether it's a noisy pump or a weird check engine light.
