Retired operator at the dock in Galveston showed me something about pump pressure

I was struggling with a clogged discharge line last June and this old guy named Hank walked over from his boat. He said "you're running too much suction, back off the throttle and let the water do the work" and then he adjusted my pump speed right there. Has anyone else had a stranger step in and fix a problem you were wrestling with for hours?

Had a similar thing happen to me at a marina in Charleston. Some guy named Joe saw me messing with this old pump for like two hours, just cursing under my breath. He came over, looked at it for maybe 30 seconds, and told me to check the impeller clearance. Turned out the wear plate was loose and letting air sneak in, causing a vapor lock. I've never forgotten that trick. Saved me a ton of headache later when I ran into the same issue on a friend's boat. So yeah, random strangers with decades of experience are basically magic sometimes.

Man, that's exactly the kind of guy Joe sounds like. I had a similar thing happen up in Maine back in '09, working on an old Johnson outboard that just would not start. This old lobsterman named Walt walked by, barely looked at it, and said "check the fuel line primer bulb, it's probably dry rotted and sucking air." Sure enough, it was cracked on the bottom where you couldn't even see it. He told me to swap it out and she fired right up on the first pull. Those guys just know the little things that never make it into any manual...

That old-timer wisdom usually beats anything you'll find in a manual.
