Old timer told me to grease the cutterhead every shift. I ignored him.
Had a guy with 30 years on the job tell me to grease the cutterhead every single shift. I thought he was just being paranoid. So I skipped it a few times. After about two weeks the bearings started grinding bad. Had to pull the whole assembly apart and replace them. Cost me a full day of downtime and $400 in parts. Anyone else got a maintenance tip they wish they listened to sooner?

That's the kind of hard lesson that sticks with you. It's funny how the simple, boring advice is usually the stuff that saves you the most trouble down the line. We all want to think we know better, but the old timers earned their experience the same way you just did.

My cousin tried that with engine oil once, thought he knew better than the manual because his buddy told him different... ended up replacing the whole transmission six months later. Funny how that "boring" stuff is written in blood sometimes.
