My foreman told me to run the suction head at 45 degrees in that silt, and now we're pulling up half the riverbank.
Ignored his advice, kept it shallow at 20 degrees, and clogged the pump twice before I finally listened and got a clean pull.

Ever think about how the river bottom itself changes after you drag that head through? That 45 degree cut might be creating a natural slope that keeps the bank from collapsing into your suction. A shallow angle just skims the top and undercuts everything. Seen it on a lake job where we went too flat and the whole shelf gave way overnight.

That slope theory fails in fast moving water.

Think the shelf would've failed anyway if the cut was that bad, angle or not. Lakes aren't rivers, so the slow water makes the bottom act different than what you'd see in a flow. Seems like you're putting a lot of weight on a small detail when the real issue was probably just poor ground conditions.
