Warning: drywall dust ruined my laser level on a job site last month

I was doing layout for a ceiling grid in an old office building downtown, and my cheap laser was sitting right in the cloud of dust. After about 2 hours, the beam got all fuzzy and wouldnt hold level. A senior drafter saw me cussing at it and said "you gotta bag that thing or clean the lens with alcohol every 30 minutes." I tried his trick and it worked, but the damage was already done to the sensor. Has anyone else had tools get wrecked by something stupid like dust or moisture?

Actually it's not the sensor that gets wrecked, just the lens coating.
