Spent a whole weekend trying to fix a messed up layer state in a huge civil plan set

I was working on a set of grading plans for a site in Phoenix, and my layer states got totally corrupted after a crash. I thought reloading the saved state would fix it in like 10 minutes. Nope. Every viewport had different layers frozen or turned off, and some annotation was just gone. I had to go viewport by viewport, over 60 of them, and manually reset everything by comparing it to a PDF backup. It took me from Friday night until Sunday afternoon, basically 16 hours of pure tedium. I'm still not sure if I should have just rebuilt the sheet from scratch. Has anyone else had a layer state disaster this bad, and what's your recovery plan?

Manually resetting 60 viewports sounds brutal. Did you try a script to reset them all at once?

But is it really that big of a deal? People act like layer states are the end of the world.

Bring up a good point @cole357 but I think people get dramatic because layer states in particular have this way of breaking in really stupid ways. Like I've had a layer state randomly not remember color overrides for hatches (only hatches, weird right?) and it drove me up a wall. It's not the end of the world but when you have 50 layers and each one needs a specific linetype it stops being funny real quick.
