Setting grids first cleaned up my drafting mess

I always jumped into drawings without setting grids first. My lines were all over the place and never lined up right. Now I make sure to set grids before anything else, and my drawings look clean. It cut down the time I spent fixing things by a lot. What simple steps have you added to your drafting routine?

My grandma always laid out her knitting needles first.

Is it maybe a bit different though? For knitting you need the right needles from the start or the whole thing is off. With sketching, like Emery said, it's more about the planning step before any tool. Your grandma's method makes total sense for her craft, @the_kelly, but for drawing the "ruler first" idea is about the rough plan, not which pencil you pick up.

My buddy Mark had the same issue with his sketches until he started using a ruler first for all his big lines. His work got way cleaner almost overnight.
