Overheard a senior drafter say CAD standards are just suggestions - shook me up a bit

I was sitting in the break room at our office in Tulsa last week and this older guy with 30 years in the trade told a new hire that layering standards are more like guidelines. He said he's worked at 5 different firms and every single one used different colors for walls and doors. It got me wondering - how strict are you all about following your company's CAD manual? I've been treating it like gospel but maybe I'm overthinking it.

That's pretty much how everything works when you look close enough. The speed limit signs on the highways are more like guidelines too, drive 55 in a 65 and everyone's flying past you like you're parked.

Pick up the office CAD manual from time to time to see if there's a solid rule that covers what you need, but don't panic over every single color or layer name. The real trick is keeping your files clean and consistent with whoever you're handing them off to, not following some ancient guideline nobody's updated.
