My old foreman swore by using a speed square for everything

I used to think a speed square was just for quick 90 degree cuts until my foreman in Phoenix showed me how to use it as a saw guide for long rips. He said clamp it at the edge and run your circular saw right along it, no measuring needed. I tried it last month on a 12 foot sheet of plywood and got a dead straight cut on the first try. Has anyone else used a speed square for something it wasn't meant for?

Yeah, I used to think it was just for quick angles too.
