My boss in Cincinnati told me to always use a 0.5mm lead for my final linework, and I fought it for years.

My old drafting teacher in Toledo had the same rule about 0.3mm leads.

Remember that line weight matters more than lead size. A light hand with a 0.7 can give you the same fine line as a heavy hand with a 0.5. Your boss was probably just trying to get consistent results from everyone.
