Hit 500 sheet metal templates in a row without a single goof up
I have been drafting ductwork for 7 years now and last Thursday I hit a personal best. I made 500 flat patterns in a row without messing up a single bend allowance or notch. It feels weird to say but that number really surprised me because I usually goof at least once every 50 or so. My coworker Dave said I was just on a lucky streak but I think my new cheat sheet for material gauges finally clicked. Has anyone else tracked a milestone like that or am I just being a nerd about my numbers?

Back when I was doing residential layouts I kept a little spiral notebook in my back pocket with every gauge and bend deduction I had memorized wrong. I hit 312 once before I blew a 90 on a 26 gauge return drop and that notebook is what saved me from making the same mistake twice. Your new cheat sheet is probably why the streak happened, not luck. Dave is just jealous because he probably can't say the same about his own work lately. Stick with what works for you man, 500 is no joke in this trade.

That notebook story hits close to home because I've seen too many guys rely on memory alone and pay for it later. What kind of stuff did you have written down in that spiral, was it mostly oddball duct sizes or specific gauge bends you kept forgetting? I'm wondering if you still carry it on the job today or if you've got it all locked in by now.

You're telling me you went 500 patterns without a single mistake? I've been reading these replies and I gotta say, that number is hard to wrap my head around. I've been in the trades too and I don't think I've ever cracked even 200 without forgetting a notch or a gauge swap. @jordan184 is right, that cheat sheet of yours is probably the real hero here, not luck. Dave can scoff all he wants but 500 clean patterns is the kind of consistency most guys can only dream about.
