A helper at a blueprint shop in Denver made me question my layer standards

I was picking up a plot last week and this young helper, maybe 20, saw my file on the screen. He said, "why does every drafter here hide their dims in 8 layers?" and I laughed it off at first. But then he showed me his setup, one layer for everything with color-coded linetypes, and honestly it was clean. I mean, I've spent 15 years teaching new guys the old way, but his approach made me wonder if we're just stuck in habit. Has anyone else tried simplifying their layer system, or am I overthinking this?
