Went with the cheap float switch, got 14 inches of water in my crawlspace

Last month my sump pump died after that big rain on the 12th. I had to pick between a $40 float switch kit from Home Depot or a $110 one from the local plumbing supply place on 5th street. I went cheap to save money for a new water heater, and of course the float arm got stuck on a piece of gravel two days later. The cleanup cost me about $300 in rental dehumidifiers and my neighbor's shop vac. Has anyone else had luck with the cheaper switches, or is this just my sign to always go with the pro grade stuff?
