Update: I finally fixed that squeaky floorboard in the hallway
It only took a Phillips head screwdriver and about ten minutes, but I'd been stepping over it for a solid year. Anyone have a good trick for finding the exact joist under the carpet?

That's a solid tip about the stud finder. I saw a video once where a guy used a strong magnet to find the nails in the floor joists. You just slide it around on the carpet and it clicks when it sticks to a nail head. Might be worth a shot if you have one handy.
