Tried using a shop vac to clear a slow drain and it actually worked

My kitchen sink was backing up a bit, and I didn't have a plunger handy. I sealed the overflow hole with a wet rag, put the shop vac hose tight over the drain, and gave it a short burst. It pulled up a nasty clump of gunk on the first try. Has anyone else tried this method on a bathroom sink?

Wow, my buddy tried that on his bathroom sink and it worked a little too well. It blew a joint loose under the vanity and he had a small flood. That trick can be risky on plastic pipes.

Just be careful with the pressure, you can actually damage the p-trap under the sink.

Happened to my buddy Tom. He used a plunger on his kitchen sink and that thing shot off like a rocket. Water everywhere under the cabinet. @victor_carr54 is right about plastic pipes, they can't handle that sudden pressure. Ruined a whole bag of flour he had stored down there.
