The guy at the lumber yard told me I was using the wrong nails for my deck boards

So I was building a new deck out back behind my house in Akron, nothing fancy, just a 12x16 platform. I was using regular galvanized nails like I always do and this old timer unloading his truck says those are gonna pop up in a year with the weather changes here. He told me to switch to ring shank nails or stainless steel screws for a real long term hold. I ended up pulling out about 80 nails I had already put in and went with the ring shank ones instead. Has anyone else dealt with nail pops on a deck after a couple of winters?

Ring shanks are the way to go, you'll thank that old timer later.

Ugh, the old "pulling out 80 nails" move... I feel your pain on that one. I once built a little planter box and had to redo it because I used drywall screws (don't ask, I was young and dumb, haha).
