Switched from latex to oil-based primer on my porch railings

Honestly, I spent 10 years swearing by latex primer for everything exterior. Last month I repainted the front porch railings on my 1920s house in Columbus and the latex peeled right off within two weeks. A buddy who does historic restoration told me to strip it and use oil-based primer instead, said it bites into the old lead paint better. I was skeptical but tried it on one section first, and after 3 rainstorms that spot still looks perfect. Now I'm redoing the whole porch with oil-based primer. Anyone else made the switch for older painted surfaces?
