Old timer at the lumber yard taught me to read grain direction
Guy named Frank stopped me from ripping a cedar board the wrong way, said "you're fighting the tree son." He showed me how to check the end grain in 10 seconds. Anyone else have a random stranger save them from a dumb mistake?

Frank's old school trick saved me from splitting a piece of curly maple once. I was about to run it through the jointer backwards. He just pointed at the end grain and grunted. I would have ruined a twenty dollar board in two seconds flat. Heart side up is the rule I live by for ripping now. Bark side down for planing, every single time.

I mean I've messed up grain direction plenty and the board didn't burst into flames or anything, it just took a little more sanding. People act like it's the end of the world but half the time you can't even tell once it's installed.
