My basement sump pump died at 2am during a downpour in Columbus

I mean, the power flickered off and on twice that night so I figured it was just a blip. Nope, the float switch got jammed on a piece of gravel and the pump ran nonstop until it burned out. By the time I woke up, there was about 3 inches of water across the whole floor and my storage boxes were soaked. I ended up renting a utility pump from Home Depot for $38 and running a hose out the window, but now I'm paranoid about checking that float every single month. Has anyone else had a sump pump fail in a way that wasn't the motor itself?

Float switches are the least of your worries, the pump itself is what fails.
