I finally got why my dad saved every old hinge

Tbh, I used to toss old hinges and handles whenever I redid a door or cabinet. My dad kept a coffee can full of them in the garage for like 30 years, and I always thought it was hoarding. Then last month I needed a specific 3 inch brass hinge for a 1940s door in our place, and no big box store had anything close. I called him and he pulled one out of that can, exact match, no rust. He just said, 'When you take things apart, you never know what will fit back together later.' That stuck with me because I now have my own bin starting, and it's already saved me two trips to the hardware store. Has anyone else got a box of random hardware that somehow keeps coming through?
