Went to the hardware store in Greenville and saw a whole wall of paint samples organized by mood

I was picking up some spackle and walked past the paint section. They had these big boards with color groups like 'calm', 'energetic', and 'cozy' instead of just the usual color names. The 'cozy' section was all warm browns and soft oranges, which made me think about redoing our living room. Has anyone tried picking a paint color this way, or is it just a fancy sales trick?

My local Home Depot in Springfield tried that mood-based setup last year, but they kept the old color names too, like "seaside retreat" was still Benjamin Moore's Palladian Blue. It's not really a trick, but those mood labels can be way too broad (what's "calm" to them might feel cold to you). I found it easier to grab a few samples from the "cozy" wall and then look up the actual paint chip names online to read real room photos. It's a decent starting point if you ignore their fancy words and just see if you like the actual color in your own light.

Mary614 has a point, but I like the mood labels as a good first step.
