Update: I was convinced a miter saw was overkill for my needs

My neighbor in Phoenix let me borrow his DeWalt 10-inch model to cut some 2x4s for a deck bench, and the clean, fast cuts saved me a whole afternoon of struggling with a hand saw. I mean, I got the whole frame done in under an hour, which completely changed my view on investing in the right tool. Anyone have a recommendation for a decent, budget-friendly miter saw for a beginner?

Exactly, the right tool changes everything.

What model did you end up getting?

That thing about "the right tool changes everything" really hit home for me. My buddy had a similar experience with a cordless drill, but it went sideways. He bought this high end DeWalt to save time on building a deck, then spent two hours trying to find the charging cord in his garage. I told him, tool only works if you don't lose the parts. But yeah, @shah.evan nailed it with that line. For a budget miter saw, I'd check out the Ryobi 10-inch. It's not going to win any contests, but it'll cut 2x4s all day without breaking the bank. My neighbor's DeWalt is way nicer, but he paid double what I did for mine. Just watch out for the blade wobble on the cheaper ones. That's where the real difference shows.
