That old guy at the lumber yard told me to measure twice and cut once, then winked when my first board came up an inch short.
He was right about the smart thing, but I still measure three times now after that $20 mistake last Tuesday - anyone else have a simple saying from a stranger that actually saved you money?

My buddy Dave had this old farmer tell him to always count your change before you walk away from the register, and it saved him $40 when a cashier accidentally gave him change for a twenty instead of a fifty. He still double-checks every receipt now, even at the grocery store.
