Spray foam vs rigid board in my attic, picked wrong and paid for it
Had to pick between closed cell spray foam and rigid foam board for my 1960s ranch attic outside Cleveland. Spray foam quote came in at $1,800, rigid board was about $600 in materials but a full weekend of work. I went cheap with the boards and cut them myself, but my cuts left gaps everywhere and the air sealing was a joke. Three months later my heating bill jumped $40 a month and I found frost on the underside of the roof sheathing. Ended up paying a crew $1,500 to spray over the gaps, so I basically paid full price plus my wasted time. Anyone else mess up an attic insulation choice and have to redo the whole thing?
