Serious question, my neighbor mentioned he spent $1200 on a custom closet system but built his own for under $300.

Honestly, that got me thinking about how many projects we assume need a pro, so has anyone else tackled a big built-in they were told to hire out for?

That "big built-in" idea is a trap for a lot of people. The cost of a single mistake can wipe out any savings. Your time, buying the right tools, and fixing errors adds up fast. Not everyone has the skills or the space to do it right. Sometimes paying a pro is just the smarter move.

Right, so @the_reese, you're saying it's a false economy?

Those $200 mistakes add up quick though. I spent $600 on a bookshelf build last year and messed up the miters on two boards. Had to buy $80 worth of replacement wood and a new saw blade. @henrybaker probably gets that feeling when you realize youve spent more time fixing errors than the actual build took. The_reese is right that time and tool costs eat into savings fast. A lot of people forget about the learning curve that comes with these projects.
