Serious question, did anyone else buy a $40 stud finder that just beeps at drywall seams?
Bought a $40 stud finder at the Ace in Boise and it beeped on every seam in my garage wall, so I hung a 60 lb shelf on a hollow spot and it ripped out of the drywall at 2am, what do you all actually use to find studs?
That beeping on every seam thing happened to me too, drove me nuts until I figured out the cheap ones pick up the paper tape and mud. What works for me is the old knuckle tap method first, just rap along the wall and listen for the dull thud versus the hollow ring. Then I take a thin finish nail and poke a few test holes where it sounds solid, you can patch those with a dab of spackle and nobody ever sees them. A magnet works good too, run it around and it'll stick to the drywall screws holding the stud. For a 60 lb shelf I'd want two studs no question, that much weight on anchors alone is asking for trouble.
