My neighbor's trick for leveling a shed foundation saved my back

My neighbor Bob told me to use a string line and a line level instead of a long board and a bubble level. I thought he was crazy because I'd always used a 4-foot level on the joists. But I tried it on my 8x10 shed last spring and it took me like 20 minutes instead of 2 hours. The string line showed me exactly where the high and low spots were in the gravel base. Has anyone else used this method or do you swear by something else for getting a flat shed floor?

Especially if you're working alone, the string method is a total game changer (no more trying to hold a level and squint at bubbles while balanced on gravel). I actually take it a step further now and use mason's line with the little corner blocks that let me stretch it super tight between stakes without knots slipping. It's crazy how much easier it is to see the low spots when you can literally walk around and look at the gap under the string from any angle.

Yeah @mary614 that string trick works great if you remember to account for the slope of the ground itself.
