My neighbor's offhand comment about my pergola made me redo the whole footer

Last month my neighbor Bob watched me leveling posts and joked that I was overbuilding for a 10x12 shade structure. He mentioned his uncle's deck lasted 30 years on less, but I checked my soil and realized the clay here in Ohio shifts something fierce, so I doubled the concrete anyway. Glad I did, because two weeks later we got that freak storm and everything stayed rock solid. Anyone else talked into skipping a step and paid for it later?
