My brother told me to use a 3/8 inch drill bit for the shelf brackets. Wrong.

He swore it was the right size for the wall anchors I bought. Drilled six holes in my plaster wall before I even tried the anchor. They just spun right out, leaving huge craters. Had to patch everything and start over with the 1/4 inch bit the anchor box actually said to use. Anyone else have a simple tip that went totally sideways?

Ever notice how the person most confident in giving advice is usually the least qualified? My uncle once insisted you could jump a car with the cables in any order. Fried the alternator. Another friend was adamant that "simmer" meant a rolling boil. We had burnt chili and a kitchen full of smoke. Some people just say things with total certainty, and you don't think to double check until it's too late.

Totally the same vibe as people who crank the heat to "high" to boil water faster lol.

Consider what makes people speak with such misplaced confidence. Maybe they confuse remembering something with actually knowing it, and we trust the tone more than the content. It's a dangerous mix of pride and ignorance.
