I finally realized I was painting walls wrong for 15 years

Last month I was helping my buddy paint his living room in Phoenix. He showed up with one of those 18 inch rollers and a pan. I laughed and said good luck with that tiny setup. Then he finished three walls while I was still trying to get an even coat on one. Turns out I've been using way too much paint on the roller and not rolling it out enough before hitting the wall. All those years of drips and uneven patches. Has anyone else had a similar moment where someone casually showed you a basic technique you'd been messing up?

Read something similar on r/HomeImprovement last year, some contractor was saying most people dip the roller too deep and that's where the mess starts. He said only about a quarter inch of nap should touch the paint, then you gotta roll it on the grid until it sounds tacky. Tried it on my bedroom ceiling last week and it came out way smoother than any wall I've ever done.

Buddy of mine tried that trick on his garage walls and said it was the first time he didn't have paint drips all over the floor.
