Finally figured out my closet shelf was mounted upside down for 2 years
I kept wondering why my wire shelves in the laundry room always sagged in the middle, even with light loads. Then my neighbor took one look and pointed out the little lip was facing up instead of down, which is apparently the wrong way for support. After 2 years of frustration, I flipped them around in about 20 minutes and now they hold twice the weight without bending. Has anyone else had a similar facepalm moment with something that was right in front of them?

Wait, I actually think the lip is supposed to face up on those shelves. My dad owned a hardware store for 30 years and he always said the little lip keeps lighter items from rolling off, so facing up is correct.

I heard something similar from a contractor on a home improvement podcast... he said the lip facing up keeps cans and jars from sliding during an earthquake. That makes sense especially if you live in an area with small tremors. Never really thought about it until I heard that explanation.
