Figured out I was installing toilet flappers wrong for like 15 years

Last weekend I was swapping out a leaky flapper in my master bath and something just clicked. All this time I was hooking the chain to the closest hole on the arm, thinking that gave the best flush. Then my neighbor Bob watched me do it and said dude you're choking the valve, move it to the second hole. Sure enough the toilet flushes way better now and uses less water. How long did it take you guys to realize you'd been doing some basic fix wrong the whole time?

Absolutely. @spencer_bell, that's exactly what mine was doing. I always thought the tighter chain meant more power, like a heavier foot on the gas. Bob set me straight though. He said you want a little slack so the flapper lifts all the way without fighting itself. I moved the clip to the second hole like he suggested and the roar turned into a normal flush. Now my toilet just sounds like it's flushing, not like it's about to launch into orbit.

Is that why my toilet sounds like it's trying to take flight every time I flush?
