Choosing between a new fence or a privacy screen for my patio

I had to pick between building a whole new wooden fence or just putting up a privacy screen on my patio. The fence would have cost about $1,200 for materials and taken a full weekend. I went with the privacy screen using some 1x4 cedar boards and outdoor fabric, which only took an afternoon and cost around $150. It blocks the view from my neighbor's deck perfectly and lets more light through than a solid fence would. I'm really happy with how it turned out for a small outdoor space. Has anyone else done something like this for a quick privacy fix?

Smart move going with the screen. I did basically the same thing last summer because a full fence felt like too much for our little yard. That cost and time difference is huge. The cedar and fabric combo is perfect, it lasts way better than you'd think and like you said, it doesn't make the space feel dark and closed in. I just used some basic outdoor stain on the wood to help it last even longer.

Totally stole the stain idea from my neighbor after my first attempt looked like a sad kindergarten art project.
