Warning: dropped $38 on a book press from Etsy and it bent my first rebound copy
I got into rebinding last year and figured a cheap press would be fine for pressing text blocks after gluing. Found one on Etsy for $38 with good reviews, waited 3 weeks for it to ship, and the first time I cranked it down the plates flexed and warped the spine of a $45 hardcover I'd already stripped. The seller blamed me for overtightening but the threads on the bolts were already stripping out of the box. I'm looking at the cast iron options now but they're all $150 and up. Has anyone here built their own press with hardwood and threaded rod, and did it actually hold up?
