The Saturday I rebound 3 paperbacks in my garage and finally got a cover to lay flat
Back in 2019 I spent a whole Saturday in my garage in Toledo rebinding three old paperbacks that were falling apart, and it was the best day I had all year with book mods. I had picked up a cheap bone folder and some PVA glue at a craft store the week before, total cost was maybe $14, and I just went at it. The first two came out kind of lumpy near the spine but the third one, a beat up copy of a mystery novel I got for 50 cents at a garage sale, laid totally flat when I opened it. I remember standing there in my garage holding it up like a trophy while my wife watched from the door and laughed at me. What made that day stand out was that I stopped following a video tutorial step by step and just trusted my hands for once. I also stained the page edges with some coffee I let dry out, which gave it this old worn look I was going for. Now I look back and laugh because my covers are way cleaner but they don't have that same messy charm. Does anyone else miss their early messy attempts more than the stuff they make now?
