The library sale bin ruined my plain edge painting
I grabbed a beat-up paperback from the Friends of the Library sale for 50 cents last month, just to practice edge painting on. The pages were foxed and the cover was peeling, but it had this gorgeous old map endpaper I wanted to save. I tried staining the edges with a coffee wash and ended up with a streaky mess, so I sanded it down and went with a layered acrylic technique instead. That wreck of a book made me realize I was way too precious about my nice copies. Now I buy dollar bin books just for testing new finishes, and my good books stay untouched. Anyone else use junky books as their test canvas, or do you risk your nicer ones?
