Spotted a killer book mod at a used bookstore in Portland

I was at Powell's Books last weekend digging through the horror section. Found a copy of House of Leaves where someone had glued in a tiny envelope on the inside back cover. Inside was a hand written note that looked like it was part of the story. It gave me the idea to try something similar on my own books. Has anyone else hidden little messages or objects in their mods to make them more interactive?

Actually there was this article I stumbled on a while back about someone who hollowed out a section of an old Stephen King paperback and hid a tiny flashlight in there, so when you opened to a certain page it would light up. Seemed like a lot of work but kinda cool. For my own mod I tried something simpler - I wrote a little note on a piece of old paper and glued it between two pages in a worn out copy of The Haunting of Hill House. Doesn't change the story much but makes it feel a bit more personal, if that makes sense.

Did you see that article on Boing Boing a while back about somebody sewing tiny LED lights into the binding of an old copy of Moby Dick so every time you turned past a certain chapter it blinked like a lighthouse? That level of dedication blows my mind. I get what you mean about personal touches though. I once cut a small pocket into the inside of a beat up copy of The Shining and slipped one of those old library checkout cards in there, the kind with metal corners. It doesn't do anything but it makes the book feel alive, like it's got a little history now.
