Serious question, has anyone else fought with PVA glue drying too fast on a rebind?
Tried rebinding a 400 page fantasy novel last weekend and the PVA was tacky within 90 seconds. I was rushing to line up the spine cloth and it wrinkled so bad I had to peel it off and start over. Took me 4 tries and about 6 hours total just to get the cover on straight. Ended up mixing in a tiny bit of water to slow it down, but now I'm worried the bond won't hold. Has anyone found a trick for extending the open time without messing up the glue strength?

That 90 second tack time is normal for straight PVA, its just how the stuff works. Mixing in water does weaken the bond a bit but for a spine cloth you're probably fine since the cloth is mostly decorative. Next time try a 50/50 mix of PVA and methyl cellulose paste, gives you way more open time without killing the strength.
