Paying $18 for book cloth when a T-shirt would've worked

Bought fancy book cloth online for a rebind project. $18 with shipping. Stiff, hard to fold around corners. Wasted half a roll before switching to an old cotton T-shirt I cut up. Worked better, softer, no fraying. Anyone else ditch the specialty stuff for random fabric around the house?
