Half my book edges after trying the sanding trick

I kept seeing people sand the page edges for that smooth, worn look. Thought it would wreck the paper or make a mess. Tried it on a beat-up paperback last week with 220 grit, went slow, moved in one direction. The fuzz came off clean and the edge felt like soft leather. Did the other side today and it matches perfectly. My only issue is the dust, wore a mask and still sneezed for ten minutes. Anyone else deal with crazy paper dust? Does a lower grit leave a better finish or just tear pages?
