Glue stick versus wheat paste, the gap filler debate is over for me

I tried patching a torn map in my atlas with a glue stick and the edges curled up like bacon within 3 days. Switched to wheat paste after a tip from a librarian in Portland and it's flat as a table, what do you use for invisible repairs?

Ha, yeah glue sticks are a trap! I did the same thing with some old comic books, edges went all crinkly and gross. Wheat paste is the move, it's like magic how it just stays flat and you can move things around before it dries. Took me way too long to learn that one.

Used to swear by glue sticks for everything, thought wheat paste was just for old book nerds. Then I tried fixing a vintage road map with a glue stick and the paper bubbled up like a fried egg after two days. Wheat paste flattened it out smooth and it actually stayed put, no wrinkly edges or weird shiny spots. Now I keep a little jar of the stuff mixed up for any paper repair, even my kids' ripped coloring books. It takes a bit longer to dry but you can position the tear perfectly before it sets, that alone sold me on it.
