Shoutout to the digital nomad coworker who said "location independence" is just a fancy term for being broke in a cheaper country

Last month in Chiang Mai I realized they were right after my $400/month apartment had a cockroach problem and my "office" was a sticky table at a coffee shop where the wifi cut out every 20 minutes, so has anyone else found that the dream of working from anywhere just means you're trading one set of problems for another?

Ha, that's rough. So how do you tell the difference between someone actually making it work and someone just lying to themselves about the "lifestyle"?

The ones who are good at it talk about the boring practical stuff like meal prep schedules and utility bills, not just the fun parts. They can tell you exactly what time their partner gets home on a random Tuesday and how they handle it when plans fall through. If someone dodges those questions or gets all philosophical about it, they're probably just selling themselves on the idea.
