Pro tip: check your visa before you land in Bangkok

I flew into Thailand last Tuesday thinking I could just extend my tourist visa at immigration. Got flagged at Suvarnabhumi because I had overstayed 3 days from a trip 2 years ago. They fined me 2,000 baht and flagged my passport for the next 6 months. Anyone else get hit with a surprise old overstay you forgot about?

Heard this exact thing happen to a buddy of mine at Phuket airport last year. He had no clue about some old overstay from a trip four years back and they slapped him with a fine on the spot.

Man that "he had no clue" part hits way too close to home lol. I swear I’ve got like zero memory of what I did last week let alone some trip from four years ago. Probably walked out of Thailand with a smile not realizing I racked up a hidden bill like some kind of travel ninja debt. If I ever got hit with a surprise fine I’d probably just nod and pay it while pretending I was in on the joke the whole time. Honestly my brain’s so forgetful I’d probably overstay my own lunch break if given the chance. At least your buddy got a funny story out of it even if his wallet didn’t.
