Is slow travel in Chiang Mai actually cheaper than fast hopping, or am I just bad at math?

I spent $1,400 in 3 weeks bouncing through Bangkok, Hanoi, and Da Nang, but a friend swears staying put in Chiang Mai for that same $1,400 over 5 weeks was the move, so which one is really the smarter play?
